“Is It Possible to Change Eye Color?” It has become one of the most asked questions recently. We are talking about Eye Health and Diseases Specialist Lasik/Laser Eye Surgeon Op. Dr. We asked our teacher Ömer TAKEŞ. “Sir, is it possible to change eye color?”
“Yes, it is possible to change eye color. In today’s medicine, there are different techniques to change eye color permanently. In this article, I will share with you three different methods used to change eye color.
1. Cornea Dyeing (Tattoo Method)
The first method is used especially when any disease develops in the cornea, the surface layer of the eye. In this case, dullness or whiteness occurs in the cornea and the eye loses its natural color. In such cases, the surface layer is painted using the tattoo method to bring the cornea to a similar color to the other eye.
This method is very effective in aesthetic correction of diseases such as corneal opacities (clouds in the cornea). It is generally applied when there is a problem with eye health and provides a cosmetic solution without affecting vision.
2. Artificial Iris Implant
The second method is a surgical method used in cases affecting the iris layer of the other eye. Photographs of the iris layer of the eye are taken and an artificial iris is created in accordance with the natural iris structure. By placing this artificial iris inside the eye, it becomes possible to change eye color.
However, I do not recommend this method to completely healthy individuals. Artificial iris implant is mostly applied to patients who have experienced eye trauma or who have not developed a congenital iris (in cases such as coloboma). In other words, this method is a technique used for therapeutic purposes, not for aesthetic purposes.
3. Femto-Laser Assisted Eye Color Changing (FLAAK)
One of the most modern and reliable methods is eye color changing using femtosecond laser technology. In this method, a tunnel is created through the cornea layer of the eye, biocompatible dyes are placed in that tunnel and the eye color is permanently changed.
This third method is especially preferred by completely healthy people. During the first few days after the application, there may be complaints such as slight light sensitivity, burning and stinging in the eyes. However, when the procedure is performed correctly and carefully, these side effects pass quickly and the eye color change gives permanent and satisfactory results.
Recent research and my personal experience show that this method is safe and its aesthetic results are quite successful. For this reason, I recommend femto-laser assisted keratopigmentation (FLAAK) to my patients who want to change their eye color for aesthetic purposes.
Which Method is Right for You?
All three methods have advantages and limitations. If you have a corneal disease or an eye-related aesthetic problem, you can choose the most suitable method for you with the guidance of your doctor. However, if you want to change your eye color for purely aesthetic purposes, the safest and most modern solution will be the femto-laser assisted method.
Remember, eye health comes first. “Before you take a step to change your eye color, you should consult a specialist ophthalmologist and get accurate information.”
