Stye; What is Dog Elbow, Eyelash Fold Inflammation, Chalazion?

Stye; It is the cystic structure that appears under or above the eyelids, popularly known as dog’s elbow and medically known as hordeolum. It begins as pain, redness and swelling in the lid, and if it cannot be resolved spontaneously or with medication over time, it turns into a cystic structure and is now called Chalazion.

The most common causes of styes are Blepharitis, which we call eyelash root inflammation, and blockage of the meibomian glands in our lids.

How is stye treated?

In its treatment, warm dressing, antibiotic cortisone drops or systemic treatment are applied. To prevent stye and eyelash root inflammation, regular eyelash root care and hot dressing are recommended.

IPL Mask (LLLT) sessions, which have become very common in recent years and which we apply in our clinic, help shrink and regress both developed and developing styes. With this treatment, which is applied in 3 sessions, the mouths of the meibomian glands in the deep tissues are opened and the oil release in the lids increases thanks to infrared light.

If the stye has reached the chalazion stage, the tissue there must be removed surgically and the cyst must be drained. While doing this, it is useful to intervene in a way that removes the capsule of the cyst instead of directly emptying it with a syringe.
