A conjunctival nevus is a pigmented lesion on the conjunctiva, the membrane covering the white part of the eye. It is similar to moles seen on the skin. It is usually a benign condition and does not pose a serious threat to eye health.
However, in some cases, especially nevi that are growing or have significant changes, they may be at risk of developing into melanoma, a more serious condition. Therefore, regular eye checks are very important.
What are the Symptoms of Conjunctival Nevus?
- A dark, flat or slightly raised lesion on the white part of the eye
- In rare cases, the size and color of the lesion may change over time.
How to Diagnose Conjunctival Nevus?
Conjunctival nevus is usually diagnosed by an ophthalmologist during an eye examination. The doctor can make a diagnosis by examining the lesion in detail with a magnifying instrument (biomicroscope). If necessary, it may be necessary to take a small tissue sample (biopsy) from the lesion and examine it under a microscope.
How is Conjunctival Nevus Treated?
In most cases, treatment is not necessary for conjunctival nevus. Regular eye checks may be sufficient, especially if the lesion is small in size, stable in color, and does not pose any threat to eye health.
Conjunctival Nevus Treatment may only be required in the following cases:
- Enlarging or changing lesions: If the size, color or shape of the lesion changes over time, this may be a sign of malignant transformation and treatment may be required.
- Cosmetic reasons: If the location or appearance of the lesion increases the person’s aesthetic concerns, surgical removal may be considered.
What are the Treatment Methods for Conjunctival Nevus Treatment?
Treatment of conjunctival nevus is usually surgical. During the surgical procedure, the lesion is completely removed. Postoperative recovery usually occurs within a few days. Other treatment methods may include:
- Cryotherapy: Destruction of the lesion by freezing
- Laser treatment: Laser vaporization of the lesion
Conjunctival Nevus Regular Eye Checks Should Be Performed
If you have a conjunctival nevus in your eye, it is important to have it checked regularly by your eye doctor. If any new lesion develops in your eye or if an existing lesion changes in size, color or shape, be sure to consult your ophthalmologist.
