Smart Lens Questions and Frequently Asked Topics

Smart lenses play an important role in the permanent correction of age-related vision problems. Frequently preferred in the treatment of cataracts, presbyopia, and other refractive errors, these lenses raise many questions from our patients. Below, we have compiled the most common questions and our answers.

1. What Is a Smart Lens and What Is It Used For?

Smart lenses (trifocal intraocular lenses) are artificial lenses implanted inside the eye that provide clear vision at distance, intermediate, and near ranges. While they are commonly used in cataract treatment, they also help patients with age-related near-vision loss (presbyopia) achieve greater independence from glasses.

2. Can Everyone Have Smart Lens Surgery?

No. This surgery is generally suitable for people over the age of 40 who have cataracts or who do not want to rely on glasses. However, eligibility must be assessed by a specialist based on factors such as corneal thickness, retinal health, and the overall structure of the eye.

3. How Is Smart Lens Surgery Performed?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. The natural lens is removed and replaced with a trifocal lens. It usually takes 10–15 minutes, and the patient is discharged the same day.

4. Do Smart Lenses Last a Lifetime?

Yes. Thanks to their biocompatible design, smart lenses can remain in the eye for life and typically do not need to be replaced.

5. What Are the Risks of the Surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks. Complications such as infection, increased intraocular pressure, or retinal detachment can occur, although they are rare. When performed by an experienced surgeon, these risks are very low.

6. What Is the Recovery Process Like?

Recovery is generally quick. Vision may be blurry during the first few days. It is important to use prescribed eye drops regularly and attend follow-up visits. Clear vision is usually achieved within a few weeks.

7. Is Night Vision Affected?

Some patients may experience glare or halos around lights at night. This is usually temporary, and the brain gradually adapts to the new lens (a process known as neuroadaptation).

8. What Is the Difference Compared to Laser Surgery?

Laser treatments work on the cornea, whereas smart lens surgery involves implanting an artificial lens inside the eye. Smart lenses provide a more permanent solution, especially for cataract patients and age-related vision problems.

9. Do Smart Lenses Require Maintenance?

No. Because the lens is implanted inside the eye, no external maintenance is needed. There is no insertion/removal or cleaning, unlike contact lenses.

10. What Is the Success Rate?

When the right patient is selected and the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon, the success rate is very high. Most patients achieve glasses-free vision for both distance and near.
