Eyelid Aesthetics (Blepharoplasty)

As we age, various structural changes occur in our eyelids. While sagging skin and fat herniations develop in the upper eyelids, puffiness and under-eye bags appear in the lower eyelids. These changes not only raise aesthetic concerns but also lead to functional problems—such as a constantly tired appearance and, especially in the case of upper eyelid drooping, a narrowing of the visual field due to excess skin covering the eyes.

Eyelid aesthetics, or blepharoplasty, is the surgical procedure we perform to give structurally altered eyelids a more functional and aesthetically pleasing appearance. The surgery can be performed under local anesthesia. About one week after the procedure, the cosmetic stitches are removed, and the patient can return to daily life.

What Should Be Considered After Eyelid Aesthetic Surgery?

Tissue healing after eyelid surgery varies from person to person but generally requires about one week. Swelling and redness around the eyelids immediately after surgery are considered normal, and cold compresses are recommended. It is advised to keep the surgical area dry until the stitches are removed (about a week later) and to use any ointment or medication prescribed by your doctor as instructed.

Are Eyelid Surgeries Performed Only for Aesthetic Purposes?

While the appearance of the eyelids carries aesthetic value, they also have critical functional importance for overall eye health. In particular, the tear drainage system—from the surface of the eye through the tear ducts into the nose—requires a healthy and well-aligned eyelid structure to function properly. With eyelid surgery, we can correct droopy or misaligned eyelids and eliminate issues like excessive tearing, which can significantly affect daily life.

In patients with eyelid drooping (ptosis), eyelid surgery helps not only to correct asymmetry but also to expand the field of vision, ultimately achieving healthier and more functional eyelids.
